Instructional Programs

Since 2009, the Foundation has funded over $625,000 of programs selected by Morningside’s academic team that directly enhance the learning environment for your children. None of these special programs and curriculum enrichments would be possible without the support of you, the parents and supporters of Morningside Elementary.

One-on-One and Small Group Tutoring:

Educational Advisory Foundation – This Teacher to Student Tutoring (TST) program provides early one on one and small group tutoring to improve reading and math skills through individualized instruction in grades K – 2.

Promethean – designed to increase engagement and provide a platform to boost the interactivity of classroom lessons, ActivBoard interactive whiteboards and Promethean’s teaching software provide the essential building blocks for any digitally connected classroom. By the end of this year, 100% of core kindergarten through 5thgrade classrooms will be equipped with the latest Promethean technology.

iPads – iPads are powerful tools for art-making and creativity in our art classrooms. The purchase of an additional ten iPads will ensure students have more access to this tool, with a full thirty unit iPad cart shared between our two art teachers.

Reading and Language Arts:

Fundations Phonics – is a phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program for our K – 3 classrooms.  Fundations makes learning to read fun while laying the groundwork for life-long literacy.

Shurley English – helps students incorporate a strong foundation of grammar and language skills into a well-organized writing process to create effective communication.

Wordly Wise – provides direct academic vocabulary instruction, developing the link between vocabulary and reading comprehension.  This program also includes writing and word study, with Greek and Latin roots.

Learning A-Z – provides digitally delivered teaching products that support instruction and student growth in reading and writing, including a leveled reading library to strengthen students’ reading skills.

Handwriting Without Tears Cursive Handwriting Program – There is a strong connection between handwriting proficiency and literacy skills.  We also believe that helping our upper grade students learn to read and write in cursive is an important tool for cognitive development.

First in Math – a curriculum supplement that gives students the fundamental skills they need to achieve their academic goals. Students become immersed in a progression-based, interactive environment where new skills are acquired and improvement is continually recognized.

Starfall – a membership program for our school that gives our teachers in the youngest grades access to math activities, games, songs, as well as literacy support, inspiring a love of learning through exploration in a safe and playful environment.

Complete Reading Series – considered by educators to be the “gold standard” of professional development for teachers in Georgia. This is a 70 hour comprehensive reading series designed to empower teachers to understand and master the content and instructional practices necessary to teach reading, writing, and spelling to all students. All of our staff have either finished or are in the process of finishing these six courses.

Orton Gillingham – a cutting-edge instructional method being deployed by the best private schools in Atlanta and across the country. Orton-Gillingham is an instructional approach intended primarily for use with persons who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing of the sort associated with dyslexia. In the hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor, it is a powerful tool of exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility. Due to the investment of time and money required, the Orton-Gillingham approach has traditionally been out of reach of public education. The Morningside faculty has the tools to reach every child, regardless of ability or challenge.

ASCD – a global community of educators dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching, and leading. MES Foundation generously funds teachers to attend the annual national conference, which showcases the latest educational research and successes from across the United States.
