About Us

Our Mission

The mission of the Morningside Elementary School Foundation is to foster teaching excellence and enhance student achievement through strategic investments in curriculum, teacher training and technology programs.

A Word from the Principal

audrey sofianosI continue to be overwhelmed by the tremendous support our Morningside Elementary School Foundation provides to all of our children. Since first meeting with the Foundation, I have been in awe of their commitment to our school, each individual child, our teachers, and truly our entire Morningside Community. Your generous financial giving to our MES Foundation results in your students experiencing a first class education, with our staff and school having the resources they need to provide that top quality instruction each day. These resources played a critical role in Morningside being designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2016 National  Blue Ribbon School, an honor bestowed on only 244 elementary schools in the country (public and private).

Through donor contributions, the Foundation funds additional curriculum programs, technology enhancements, and staff training and development. Our staff researches the best curriculum programs in the country and we are able to support those in our classrooms.   Promethean smart board technology is available to all of our students thanks to Foundation contributions made by parents like you. Our MES staff is one of the most expert in the state with the majority being Complete Reading Series-certified and 28 having benefited from additional coveted Orton-Gillingham training. Our teachers also have the opportunity to attend national conferences, bringing back the best practices from classrooms across the U.S. Without you as a donor to our MES Foundation, these advancements and opportunities would simply not be possible.

Thank you for your generous donation to the MES Foundation for this year and years past.  Together, we will provide the learning experiences that all children deserve, so that they build a solid educational foundation to achieve and fulfill their dreams in life!

Your Principal,
Audrey Sofianos

Teacher Testimonials

“I want to thank the Morningside Foundation for providing the Shurley English program for the past four years. I believe the rigor in this program has produced stronger writers and thinkers. The skills aren’t taught in isolation and it’s very interactive. The students learn advanced skills that incorporate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. Students are actively engaged as they see, hear, and say their answers. For these reasons, I believe their retention increases. This is one of the most challenging curricula I’ve ever taught, and I can see its effectiveness every day.

– Laurie Guerino, 4th Grade Teacher

“The Morningside Foundation has dramatically impacted the lives of our students with an investment in educations strongest resource, teachers. The Educational Advisory Foundation program has placed 3 highly certified educators with strong pedagogy as tutors in the building to work with small groups of students in grades Kindergarten, First and Second. This resource came to us without restrictions and requirements from the district which has allowed each grade level to assess students with the most need to receive addition small group instruction in language, phonics and math. It has also allowed us the flexibility to move students in and out based on needs and areas of concern. It truly is an educational resource that is worth much more than its expense.”

Letter From The President

Kevin LymanDear Morningside Families,

The past academic year was an exciting one for both the Foundation and school, highlighted by the U.S. Department of Education’s designation of MES as a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School in the Exemplary High Performing Category. Thanks to the generosity of Morningside parents and other community members, the Foundation was able to fund over $134,700 of expenses in furtherance of its stated mission: to foster teaching excellence and enhance student achievement through strategic investments in curriculum and instructional programs at Morningside.

In addition to the Blue Ribbon award (and green ribbon award!), the Orton-Gillingham and Complete Reading Series programs at Morningside, which are funded entirely by the Foundation, were highlighted in a case study by the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity. The Foundation also launched a very successful partnership with the Educational Advisory Foundation (EAF), bringing highly experienced tutors to the school where they work closely with MES faculty to provide support for students needing extra attention.

The Foundation also continued to fund a wide variety of curriculum materials and programs across all grade levels including First in Math, Study Island, Fundations, National Geographic Learning, Brain Pop, Learning A-Z and many more. In addition, the Foundation worked with the PTA to procure 25 additional Promethean interactive multi-media boards to ensure that 100% of the core K-5 classrooms now have the latest instructional technology. Finally, the Foundation continued to provide funding for teachers seeking to hone their skills through outside professional training on continuing education opportunities. All of these activities were made possible by your contributions.

In April we held a special event to acknowledge the generous contributions of our Leadership Circle members—families donating a cumulative total of $1,000 or more to the Foundation during the school year. Attendees heard from Principal Sofianos, faculty members and others about the tremendous impact of Foundation-funded programs on the MES educational experience. We will look to continue this event next year as the Leadership Circle donors are critical to the ability of the Foundation to meet our mission.

The Board of Trustees of the Foundation has set a fundraising goal of $200,000 for the 2017/2018 school year. If the target is met, those funds will be used to fund programs and projects that will provide immediate benefits to Morningside teachers and students. The motivation behind the goal is to continue providing support for the critical programs and technology needed to ensure that every student at Morningside has access to the latest instructional materials and technology, allowing our award-winning faculty to best prepare our students for middle school and beyond. We also want to serve as a resource for faculty and staff wishing to expand their skill sets by taking advantage of training opportunities not funded by APS and then sharing their new skills with their colleagues at Morningside.

As public school funding comes under increasing pressure, the MES Foundation plays a critical part in ensuring the faculty and administration of our school have the resources they need to continue delivering the outstanding education experience that our children have enjoyed. In order for these needs to be met we must continue to replenish the Foundation’s coffers, so I hope that the MES Foundation finds its way into your giving plans once again.

Thanks once again for your continued support of the Morningside Elementary School Foundation.
